Lang graduated with merit from the London School of Economics with her master\u2019s in health economics, policy and management, and was awarded the 2017 Brian Abel-Smith prize for research on the impact of Medicaid expansion on nonprofit hospitals and their programs for low-income patients. She\u2019s worked as a health policy reporter, a patient advocate, a hospital director and economist. Lang also serves in leadership roles for several boards, including the <a href=\"http:\/\/charitablecarenetwork.com\/\">Georgia Charitable Care Network<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/murderdata.org\/\">the Murder Accountability Project<\/a>. She is the managing director of Fair Play.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Victor Liao<\/strong> is our policy analyst. He currently studies at New York University, where he studies biomedical engineering and public policy.<\/p>\n<p><b>Lex Winship<\/b> is our communications specialist. A graduate of the University of Florida&#8217;s College of Journalism &amp; Communications and a chronic over-thinker, she has spent her career thus far in nonprofit communications and fundraising in hopes of helping provide practical value to underserved communities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Our board is:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jamie Lord, Co-Chair: <\/strong>Jamie has lobbied at the state level for 15 years, focusing primarily on civil justice, access to the courts and education. She&#8217;s dedicated to removing barriers and creating access to things that should be fundamental\u2014health care, education, the courts\u2014but aren&#8217;t because of income inequality or geography.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Holly Lang, Co-Chair<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/beth-malone-4b720085\/\"><strong>Beth Malone, Secretary<\/strong>:<\/a> Beth is executive director and partner at Dashboard, an award-winning experimental creative agency. She\u2019s also a TED Resident whose TED Talk has been seen 1M+ times. She was named a Civic Fellow by Sarah Blakely (SPANX) Foundation and the Center for Civic Innovation in Atlanta. Beth is a graduate of Urban Land Institute\u2019s Center for Leaders, Arts Leaders of Metro Atlanta, and Ford Motor Company\u2019s Gathering of Innovators.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kat Ruckelshausen-Oni, Treasurer: <\/strong>Kat is an account director at Manhattan-based boutique marketing agency Catch NYC, and has worked with businesses ranging from startups to Fortune 500 companies in the entertainment, finance, and technology sectors. Before her career in advertising, Kat was the Program Director for the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce. Kat is a volunteer for the IWEC Foundation, an international nonprofit focused on promoting and encouraging female business ownership and leadership.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/johnnieaiello\/\">Johnnie Aiello<\/a>: <\/strong><span class=\"il\">Johnnie<\/span> is an award-winning product designer and founder of Descriptive, a digital product design and development company based NYC. He specializes in strategic design to solve business challenges and often writes about design and development. He has designed and directed digital experiences for the likes of HPE, Cura\u00e7ao, ofo, Drive Shack and John Guest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kate Cheshire:<\/strong> Kate is an award-winning graphics producer for CBS News. She got her start in broadcast news some 20 years ago at CNN. Her work has taken her around the country but she now calls NYC with her husband Scott.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/david-goodwin-leadership\/\">David Goodwin<\/a>: <\/strong><span class=\"il\">David<\/span> serves with the American Red Cross in Alabama.\u00a0<span class=\"il\">David<\/span> has more than 25 years of non-profit and advocacy experience supporting small and large organizations. His experience managing volunteer programs, fundraising and board development has allowed him to develop a strong overall awareness of non-profit needs and capabilities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/michelle-putnam-10855151\/\"><strong>Michelle Putnam:<\/strong><\/a> <span class=\"il\">Michelle<\/span> works at the Centers for Disease Control, where she&#8217;s been since January 2017. Prior to joining CDC she worked as a communications contractor with Family Health International. She has also held policy positions at Georgia-based nonprofits, including Hemophilia of Georgia and HealthSTAT, which she counts as very valuable boots-on-the-ground experience. <span class=\"il\">Michelle<\/span>\u00a0earned her Master of Public Health at Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University and her BA at Georgia State University.<\/p>\n<p>Fair Play has also received the generous support of donors and in-kind services. My issues were mainly fixed by an open-heart surgery at a hospital two hours north when I was nine. Traci, though, was not so fortunate. Born with both physical and mental disabilities, she required intensive, ongoing care throughout her childhood. Traci avait besoin d\u2019\u00e9quipements m\u00e9dicaux et de m\u00e9dicaments essentiels au maintien de la vie, qui n\u2019\u00e9taient souvent pas enti\u00e8rement couverts par notre assurance, ou pas du tout. Alors qu\u2019il y avait un h\u00f4pital \u00e0 acc\u00e8s critique une ville plus loin, les soins de Traci n\u00e9cessitaient souvent un h\u00f4pital enti\u00e8rement \u00e9quip\u00e9, obligeant les visites r\u00e9guli\u00e8res \u00e0 Savannah, \u00e0 environ une heure de route. Traci required life-sustaining medical equipment and medication that often wasn\u2019t fully covered by our insurance, if at all. While there was a critical access hospital a town over, Traci\u2019s care often required a fully equipped hospital, prompting regular treks into Savannah, about an hour away. Although grateful we had a vehicle to even make the trips, it wore on the car and the gas card. They racked up charges for cafeteria food. Co-pays and deductibles swallowed any savings. They struggled to stay afloat of the costs for their child\u2019s survival.<\/p>\n<p>Since I was aware of the world, I was aware of health care costs. I remember the stack of bills that sat on the corner of my dad\u2019s desk, always there, always growing. They read like Latin to me, a list of codes and costs that made little sense. Often, they still don\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>We live in a country with so much opportunity and so many barriers. We have the ability to make things fair, yet we\u2019re immersed in policies and practices that too often exclude. We know that poorer people are generally sicker because they can\u2019t access care, yet we still see soaring uninsured rates. We spend the most on health care of any developed country, yet we die younger from preventable causes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is why I started Fair Play.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My goal with this organization is to help control health care spending while improving accessibility and quality, achieving health equity for all community members at a reasonable cost to payors, including the patients and providers. I firmly believe we can do this.<\/p>\n<p>Fair Play exists for my family, and for everyone who struggles to access needed care \u2013 struggles that shouldn\u2019t still happen in the modern, innovative world in which we live. But through collaboration, research and direct services, we hope to help create sustainable solutions that advance us past the daily, harsh reality that too many of our communities face.
